Family Violence: Are you being abused?

Does the person you love:
  • "Track" your time?
  • Accuse you of being unfaithful?
  • Discourage relationships with family and friends?
  • Prevent you from working or attending school?
  • Criticize you for little things?
  • Anger easily when drinking or taking drugs?
  • Control money and force you to account for what you spend?
  • Humiliate you in front of others?
  • Destroy personal property or sentimental items?
  • Hit, punch, slap, kick, or bite you or your children?
  • Use or threaten to use a weapon against you?
  • Force you to have sex when you say no?
If any of this is happening to you, you may be in an abusive relationship.

Other Types of Violence:

Child Abuse
Child abuse includes: physical violence, neglect, risk of serious injury, use of child for sex act or prostitution, or placing child in a situation that can cause serious emotional trauma or damage. If you suspect a child under the age of 18 is being abused or neglected, you are required by law to report your suspicions to the Department of Social Services. An individual who makes a report in "good faith" is protected from civil and criminal liability. You can report without anyone knowing who you are.

Elder Abuse

Elder abuse includes: physical violence, emotional abuse, threats, misuse or withholding of their money, verbal abuse, neglect, or violation of privacy and basic rights. Elder abuse is often done by a relative or caregiver. Many victims are ashamed, unable to report, or afraid of what may happen if they do report. If you suspect an elderly person is being abused, contact the Department of Social Services.
